Competitors and fans alike endured rain, fire and many a delay before Matt Kenseth held-off Dale Earnhardt Jr and Greg Biffle to win the fifty-fourth Daytona 500, but the third annual iRacing.com Daytona 500 went off with nary a hitch under the partly cloudy virtual skies of the world’s foremost online racing service last Thursday and Saturday. With the competition divided into races for Rookie-Class D and Class C- Pro licenses, events saw more than 3,200 sim racers take the green flags en route to well over a million miles of online racing that saw nearly 1,000 iRacers lead one or more laps in competition. Viso stays with KV Racing
KV Racing has confirmed that EJ Viso will stay with the team for a third season in the IndyCar Series. The Venezuelan, who has competed in American single seater racing since 2008, has been a regular in KV's pre-season testing line-up, which has also featured lead driver Tony Kanaan and 11-time grand prix winner Rubens Barrichello, who could still land a third seat with the team. Official: Volvo drops the full skinny on new V40

Few vehicles have received the kind of gradual, bit by bit roll-out that - intentionally or otherwise - the new Volvo V40 has. The Swedish premium hatchback has been the subject of teasers, spy shots and leaks aplenty - including two video clips and a batch of sixteen images that surfaced just yesterday - but they've all lead up to this, its full reveal. (Well, this and its official unveiling next week.)
Scandinavia's answer to the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series - and a potential replacement not only for the C30 but also the S40 and V50 - the new V40 is shaping up as quite a looker, but now we've got the details to go with it. For starters, the V40 will be available with the cleanest diesel Volvo's ever offered, anchored at the other end of the spectrum by a 254-horsepower turbo five good for a 6.7-second sprint to 62 mph. Not too shabby, and the entire range - whether mated to manual gearbox or automatic - is equipped with start-stop engine management and regenerative braking, ensuring that, whichever powertrain is selected, it's running at optimal efficiency.
Being a Volvo, the V40 also incorporates the latest in safety features, including not only low-speed collision avoidance and pedestrian detection with full auto brake but the world's first pedestrian airbag. Although Volvo hasn't revealed whether its new entry-level model will make the transatlantic voyage to these shores, it is projecting that 85 percent of the 90,000 units it aims to sell annually will be delivered in Europe from its assembly plant in Ghent, Belgium - which doesn't bode well for American availability.

Yamaha pair play down test times
Yamaha riders Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies say they are not paying too much attention to the deficit to the Hondas on day one of the second MotoGP winter test at Sepang today. Daytona start pushed to Monday night
NASCAR officials have pushed back the start of the Daytona 500 to Monday night. NASCAR president Mike Helton announced this morning that the new starting time for the Sprint Cup Series season-opener will be 7pm US Eastern Time. Despite a dry early morning in Daytona, rain returned at around 9am and is expected to continue into the afternoon.

Ed Welburn finds a fan in President Obama

You know your job is going well when the President of the United States takes the time to mention your success. That's what happened to Ed Welburn, vice president of global design for General Motors, who was tasked with giving President Obama a tour of GM's latest offerings last month during the Washington Auto Show.
As they sat together in the front seats of a 2013 Chevy Malibu, Obama, among other matters, delivered a short assessment of all that transpired in the auto industry since the federal government bailed it out three years ago. And as they ended their tour, Obama mentioned that "the design of GM cars has gotten so much better in the past few years."
More than any person, Welburn is responsible for that improvement. Today, our sister site AOL Autos profiles the 40-year General Motors employee for a feature celebrating Black History Month. The profile focuses on his early fascination with the automotive industry, his role in helping it withstand its recent tumult and his status as the highest-ranking African American in the domestic auto market.
As for Obama's other thoughts on the rest of GM's offerings? Among the seven company models in D.C., Welburn reports the president was captivated by one in particular.
"He immediately wanted to get in the Corvette," he said.

Stewart wins first Daytona Duel
Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart claimed victory in the opening Gatorade Duel race to set the field for Sunday's Daytona 500. The Stewart-Haas driver edged out Hendrick's Dale Earnhardt Jr for the win as the race ended under caution following a big crash for Danica Patrick on the last lap. Patrick was unhurt.

Cahoe Conquers the Tricky Triangle
Pocono Raceway, also known as “The Tricky Triangle,” hosted the fourth round of the 2012 Season 1 iRacing.com IZOD IndyCar Series. A total of 40 drivers made the virtual tow to Poconos, which meant the fields were split in two with 20 drivers making the top split. With Pocono being one of the toughest tracks to setup for as well as drive, strategy would play a key role in the outcome of the online race. Diesel Thunder and Efficiency Arrive at M Performance
Having recently spent a day driving through Portugal in the well-executed but slightly less than inspiring BMW ActiveHybrid 5, we've now plunked our rumps into a very separate yet parallel 5 Series dimension. It's called the M550d xDrive, and instead of Portuguese hill country, we find ourselves driving over a heady combo of no-limit autobahn and essentially unmonitored idyllic two-lane Bavarian country roads. As luck would have it, the view ahead is sunny and dry.
As with any diesel phenom, the story here is not in the horsepower, which nonetheless rests at 376 between 4,000 and 4,400 rpm. You have to look at the peak torque: 546 pound-feet belting out a high-speed freight train tune between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. That twist joins hands with the rising horsepower curve and spirals (in hugely inspiring fashion) up to a scorching rendezvous at 4,500-4,600 rpm. After which point, the two forces share a smoke, rest up, maybe chat a little to kill time while the sweat dries, and then have at it again. And again. And again. Like any active and happy young couple should do.

Official: Mercedes-Benz integrates iPhone, Siri into all-new A-Class

The paradigm has shifted. Normally an automaker's range-topper gets the latest and greatest technology, but with the introduction of the all-new A-Class, Mercedes-Benz is flipping that order on its head.
At next month's Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes will show off the next A-Class and with it, its updated COMAND infotainment system. The user interface has undergone a complete overhaul, ditching the black and beige color scheme for a sharp, modern, three-dimensional design and a range of new features and functions, nearly all of which are centered on the iPhone 4S.
The new Digital DriveStyle app allows drivers to stream AUPEO! radio (Europe's equivalent to Pandora), connect with Facebook and Twitter to read out status updates, find your car in a crowded parking lot and get real-time traffic data and point-of-interest searches through a new Garmin navigation system. All of which is available with the entry-level "Audio 20" setup.
More intriguingly, Mercedes is the first automaker to support and integrate Apple's Siri voice-recognition technology, allowing users to make appointments, send text messages and emails, get weather status and access all their songs through voice commands.
While all these features will be limited to the Euro-only A-Class at first, Mercedes says that the iPhone-integrated COMAND Online suite of services will be coming to the B-, C- and E-Class models this fall. Hit the jump for the full details.

Last weekend saw the 2012 World Tour of iRacing kicked-off with the Roar before the 2.4 and the 2.4 Hours of Daytona – a fitting debut for the newly-rescanned Daytona International Speedway. The road racing doubleheader was a hit, to say the least, with nearly 1,900 sim racers taking to the 12 turn, 3.56 mile r-oval in their Pontiac Solstices, Mazda MX-5s, VW Jetta TDis, Mustang FR500s and Riley Mk XXs. Official: Lotus entering Evora GTE with Alex Job Racing in ALMS

There seems to be no end in sight for the rapidly expanding Lotus Racing program. In the past couple of years, the team has branched into Formula One, Indy, GP2, GP3 and a number of GT racing series around the world. Thing is - while IndyCar runs primarily in the United States and F1 is coming here too - none of those endurance championships in which Lotus has been competing have been American. That is, until now.
Teaming up wit Alex Job Racing, Lotus is supporting a factory-backed entry win the GT class of the American Le Mans Series. Together, AJR and Lotus will field a 2012 Lotus Evora GTE running the same black-and-gold livery that has proliferated across the automaker's entire motorsport division.
AJR has a whopping 39 ALMS race wins and three GT titles to its credit, and will put IndyCar driver Townsend Bell and two-time ALMS Founders Cup winner Bill Sweedler behind the wheel for the full season that will kick off at Long Beach on April 14. Follow the jump for the full press release.

Twenty-two drivers traveled to Belgium for the “Van Ophen 30 at the famous Circuit de Spa GP” in Francorchamps, Belgium during week six of the Red Sox Racing League’s 2012 Season One schedule. After hearing about the photo finish between Chad Peterson and Les Turner in last week’s race at Okayama, race fans in Belgium were eager to see a repeat performance. They would not be disappointed. Pre-race practice and qualifying sessions at the 19 turn, 4.35 mile track gave everyone a hint of what was to come as Peterson and Turner once again battled for the top spot. Official: BMW reveals new 6 Series diesel with xDrive

BMW and its commitment to maximizing the potential of every model continues with the 2012 640d xDrive. It's the first time the 6 Series has used a diesel engine, and it sound like it won't disappoint if 'sporty' and 'oil-burning' are your prerogatives: the 3.0-liter inline six with TwinPower turbos throws off 313 horsepower and 465 pound-feet, with all that twist available from around 2,000 rpm. Working through the standard eight-speed automatic will get you from 0 to 60 in five seconds, and the coupe will return an estimated 40 U.S. mpg.
This is also the first 6er to be fitted with Intelligent xDrive, which routes 60 percent of the power to the rear and 40 percent to the front in normal conditions. However, it can shuttle power from front to back and side to side depending on traction and the sporting intensity of your cornering. It will be available in convertible form as well, though we don't expect either to show up in U.S. showrooms any time soon.
