Franchitti wins third Indy 500

Dario Franchitti came from the rear of the field to take the win in a dramatic Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Scot spent the late laps trading the lead with Ganassi team-mate Scott Dixon, but Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan) managed to get between the pair with two laps to go and lined Franchitti up for a passing attempt. Sato managed to get alongside Franchitti in the first corner of the final lap, but did not allow himself enough space and bounced off the Ganassi car and into the wall, bringing out the yellows and allowing Franchitti an unchallenged run to the finish

Sebastien Loeb remains in the Acropolis Rally lead despite having to stop and change a puncture on SS20. The Citroen driver's advantage over second-placed team-mate Mikko Hirvonen has come down from 2m01s to 40s with two stages to go. Ferrari could be a contender for pole position in Monaco because the characteristics of the circuit play into the strengths of the F2012, according to technical boss Pat Fry. Nissan Juke-R on ice

There's something about the boffins over at Nissan - particularly those working at its racing headquarters in the UK. We're not quite sure what it is. Oh, right: they're bonkers. Absolutely off their rockers, in the best way possible. How else would you explain the decision to take an entry-level crossover and swap out its powertrain for that of a supercar?

We're talking, of course, about the Juke-R, the 480-horsepower demon cockroach from hell. After racing it against a field of supercars in Dubai, Nissan has taken the Juke-R to a decidedly different setting - an ice track near the former Winter Olympics site in Lillehammer, Norway - and set it loose.

And if that wasn't quite enough, the Japanese automaker didn't put it in the hands of an veteran ice racer - say, the four-time Formula One World Champion who drives for its sister company in the Andros Trophy, they gave it over to its gamer-turned-racer Lucas Ordonez who, being from Spain, had never driven on ice before. Sounds sane to us. Scroll on down to see the results in the brief video clip.

Tech 3 pair upbeat despite crashes

Tech 3 Yamaha's Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow said the fact they were both running well and challenging for a podium finish at Le Mans provided some form of consolation following their crashes. As has been the case for much of the season the pair proved almost inseparable, locked in battle not only with each other but also with Ducati's Valentino Rossi and Honda's Casey Stoner during an early four-way fight for second. As the race progressed both found it harder to stay with Rossi however, and in trying to stick on the Italian's tail both fell - Crutchlow 10 laps from the finish and Dovizioso seven laps later

Video: Man creates DIY Lexus LS 400 convertible with Sawzall

Lexus LS Convertible

We love four-door convertibles, reciprocating saws and watching other people make bad decisions, so the video seen here is a bit like our perfect YouTube cocktail. In it, the owner of a slammed Lexus LS decides he's had enough of living under the oppressive shadow of his sedan's roof. While at StanceWars Belgium 2012, he decides to fire up a generator, plug in his trusty sawzall and go to town. Not surprisingly, the sheetmetal on the roof gives up quickly, and the whole extraction takes less than eight minutes from start to finish.

Hilariously enough, it starts raining just as the owner makes the final cut. How's that for a sign from the universe? Scroll down to check out the carnage... just be prepared for the painful sound of shredded metal.

Ferrari: Temperature key to tyre puzzle

Formula 1's wild fluctuations in form this season could be the result of Pirelli's tyres being so sensitive to track temperatures, reckons Ferrari technical director Pat Fry. Ahead of a Monaco Grand Prix that could deliver a sixth different winner in the first six races of the campaign for the first time in history, teams have been left in no doubt that extracting performance from the tyres in 2012 is the key to success

Morbidelli stays on top at Donington

Gianni Morbidelli topped the second Superstars Series practice session at Donington Park. The former Formula 1 driver led the morning's first session by more than a second, and then backed that performance up be setting a best time of 1m33.568s in free practice two, leading home his Audi team-mate Thomas Schoffler by nine tenths. Thomas Biagi was third fastest - albeit another four tenths adrift of Schoffler - while his BMW team-mate Stefano Gabellini was fourth

Official: Volkswagen gives its CrossPolo the Storm Trooper look with Urban White edition

Volkswagen CrossPolo Urban White

We have to admit we're big fans of the Storm Trooper look. Combining white paint with blacked-out trim, the treatment is one you'd typically find performed in the aftermarket. But in this case Volkswagen is offering it direct from the factory. Or so it is to European customers, anyway.

The treatment is being applied to a special edition of the CrossPolo, the soft-road version of the popular Polo hatchback. The Urban White edition combines a unique shade of white paint with 17-inch alloys painted either white or black, with black roof rails and dark tinted glass aft of the B-pillar. The interior features black and light gray sports seats in cloth and Alcantara, with black headliner and trim and silver top-stitching on the controls.

Overseas buyers can choose between four gasoline and three common-rail diesel engines, with prices starting at €18,975.
