Resurgence due to set-up – Williams

Williams's chief operations engineer Mark Gillan says the team's return to podium contention in Valencia was more due to maximising its potential than any development breakthrough. After ending its victory drought with Pastor Maldonado's Spanish Grand Prix triumph, Williams had tough races in Monaco and Canada - scoring just one point from Bruno Senna's Monte Carlo 10th place. But in Valencia, Maldonado qualified third and was battling for the same position at the end of the race when he collided with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton

How Dampers Work: We Slice Open Four Types of Shock Absorbers

Shock absorbers (a.k.a. suspension dampers) are the unsung heroes of ride and handling. Lacking them, your car would porpoise over bumps and flounder on its springs through bends. As their name suggests, these tubular oil-filled devices damp (slow down) wheel and body motion, resulting in a comfortable ride, predictable steering response, and agile maneuverability. A [...]

Spy Shots: Radical Lexus LFA Final Edition rounds the 'Ring

Lexus LFA spotted testing on 'Ring - Is this the Final Edition?

Yes, it does seem sort of strange to see a prototype Lexus LFA testing on the Nürburgring just as we're hearing reports that the car is nearly sold out. But just because the original supply of 500 cars has been depleted doesn't mean Lexus isn't working on some sort of derivative or last hurrah (our spy shooter friends suggest the car could wear a "Final Edition" designation).

This prototype, painted in a decidedly cool blue, looks a lot like the Nürburgring Edition LFA that we saw last year, albeit with a few tweaks. Most noticeably, the center-mounted tri-exhaust out back has been removed in favor of two dual-exhaust ports below each of the taillamps. A larger rear diffuser has been added, and another inlet has been added to the hood to help with airflow to the engine.

Given all the breathing work done to the 4.8-liter V10, we're guessing that the car seen here offers a fair bit more than the 552 horsepower found in the standard LFA. How much more? Hopefully Lexus will give us a chance to find out.

Report: Volvo looking for partner in North America, seeks meaningful long-term relationship

Volvo grille badge closeup

Volvo is hoping to expand production into North America, and according to BusinessWeek, the Swedish automaker is currently on the search for a partnership here in the States. Ideally, this partnership would be with another manufacturer that Volvo would agree to share small car development costs with.

"In the medium term, five to six years, we need to find a proper solution in North America," Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said in an interview with BusinessWeek. "Building a plant in ourselves is maybe more unlikely. I'm looking for a partner that could help us utilize a North American plant."

Volvo has reportedly been in talks with a "couple" of manufacturers and is "open to everybody," Jacoby stated, later specifically cited Fiat as a possible solution, since the Italian carmaker is already active in the United States through the Chrysler Group.

In the meantime, Volvo - like many automakers - is expanding its production in China. BusinessWeek reports that Volvo's first factory in Chengdu is "on track," and will start producing cars in the second half of 2013.

Auctions: First production 2013 SRT Viper nets $300,000 at Barrett-Jackson [w/video]

2013 SRT Viper GTS

It's become customary for automakers to offer up the first production example of collectible cars, so it was no surprise that SRT announced earlier this year that 2013 Viper GTS VIN #1 would be selling at Barrett-Jackson's Orange County auction. Adding to the auction's appeal, proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Austin Hatcher Foundation, an organization that helps children and families dealing with issues resulting from pediatric cancer.

With the Viper's 640 horsepower V10 and beautiful carbon fiber bodywork shining under the lights, bidding for the red snake rose quickly past the six figure sticker price to a quarter of a million dollars. At this point an SRT Track Experience and a trip to this year's Petit Le Mans were thrown in as a bonus to go with the car, but it couldn't entice any bidders to go much higher and the hammer fell at $300,000.

You can view our huge gallery of photos of the 2013 SRT Viper GTS at Barrett-Jackson above, watch a video of the auction below, or head over to the Austin Hatcher Foundation web site to make a donation of your own.

Dissected: Nissan-Powered DeltaWing Race Car (Including How it Turns!)

Inarguably the most innovative new race car since the Tyrrell six-wheeler, the DeltaWing made its debut at the 2010 Chicago auto show, where it was proposed as a candidate to replace the aging Dallara chassis then used by IndyCar. The mockup and a cartoonish simulation of  it racing around Mid-Ohio drew an enormous amount of [...]

Latvala fears eighth will be his limit

Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala has admitted a top-eight result is as much as he can hope for on this week's Rally New Zealand, after he went off the road on Friday's opening leg. Having led the event following the opening stage, Latvala started day two only ninth overall because he dropped four minutes when he went off the road on SS7 on Friday afternoon. Latvala could only manage seventh fastest time on Saturday morning's opening stage, which was enough to move him past Armindo Araujo for eighth place - but he is now more than two minutes off Dani Sordo's Mini in seventh.

BMW recalls X5, X6 over leaking power steering fluid

2013 BMW X6

Due to a potential manufacturing glitch, 2,642 examples of the 2012 and 2013 BMW X5 and 2013 BMW X6 are being recalled. The steering gear surface on said models might have been improperly machined, which could cause power steering fluid to leak onto the hot exhaust and cause a fire in the engine compartment.

BMW will begin notifying owners in July, at which time they can take their crossovers to dealers to repaired free of charge. Scroll down for a notice on the matter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Brazilian endured a dismal start to the season, but finished a strong sixth in Monaco and salvaged a point in Canada after a spin. He admits that he is now more comfortable with the Ferrari F2012.

Webber: Results will decide 2013 plans

Mark Webber says his future with Red Bull Racing will be decided entirely by results - and the better he does the more likely he is to stay. Despite the Australian being strongly linked with a seat at Ferrari for 2013 on the back of some strong race showings this season, Webber believes there is every chance he will not even talk to other teams outside his current employers if he keeps doing well. "The situation depends on the results I get this year," he said in an interview with Autosprint

Contact forces DeltaWing retirement

The DeltaWing has retired from the Le Mans 24 Hours after it's contact with the #7 Toyota in the seventh hour of the race. The innovative Nissan-powered machine, which has become a crowd favourite this week, had suffered a few early issues but was back in the running when it was tagged by Kazuki Nakajima as the race restarted following a lengthy safety car period. The impact, which came at the Porsche Curves, shunted Satoshi Motoyama into the wall.

H8: Audi turns down the wick

Audi held on to the lead in a calmer eighth hour of the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours. Marcel Fassler completed an uneventful multi-stint run in the leading #1 R18 e-tron quattro, handing over to Andre Lotterer at the end of the hour. Racing continued under clear skies as the sun set over the Circuit de la Sarthe, with the TS030 Hybrid that had seized the lead so audaciously in the hands of Nicolas Lapierre still parked in the Toyota garage while the team effected repairs.

Caterham pins hopes on next upgrades

Caterham is optimistic that major updates planned for its car for the next two races can help it make the step forward it needs to start challenging the teams ahead of it. The Hingham-based outfit has not made the progress it hoped to this season, and has found itself still unable to launch a regular challenge on the more established team just ahead. A raft of aerodynamic developments and revisions to the floor of its car are scheduled for the Valencia and Silverstone races and technical director Mark Smith thinks that they should give Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov the possibility to get through to Q2 on merit.
