LeMons Good/Bad Idea of the Week: Racing AMCs! [Marlins and Hornets and Eagles, Oh My]

As creative as some BMW racers might get with their cars, the heavy-duty LeMons racers prefer marques not as well known for their racing heritage. In fact, they prefer marques that haven’t even existed for 25 years. Like, say, American Motors! We’ve seen a respectable assortment of AMC products competing in the 24 Hours of [...]

Motorsports: Travis Pastrana, Dodge Dart get first RallyCross win [w/video]

Travis Pastrana wins Global Rallycross race in New Hampshire aboard his Dodge Dart

Travis Pastrana has had a tough start to 2012, wrecking out of nearly every race he's entered. The Global RallyCross Championship has been particularly frustrating, with the Red Bull Motorsports driver finishing 8th and 15th in the first two events of the season and failing to make its past the first round of the X Games after getting smashed into the wall in the first turn.

Pastrana hopes his fortunes have turned around, though, after managing to give the Dodge Dart its first RallyCross win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this past weekend. He qualified third overall and managed to win his heat, giving him a spot on the front row for the final race. Pastrana took advantage of his position, jumping out to a first lap lead after passing Tanner Foust in a hairpin and eventually finishing just ahead of Samuel Hubinette. Brian Deegan rounded out the podium in third place, with Foust finishing in fourth and Ken Block in fifth.

"It's been so long, I almost forgot what it's like to win," said Pastrana after the race. "It is absolutely awesome to get out here and get on top. It has been a rough season."

The next and final race of the 2012 Global RallyCross season will be at Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend of September 28-29. Check out the videos below for all the leaps, jumps and bumps.

Button admits next two races crucial

Jenson Button thinks it vital that McLaren makes the most of the next two races as it bids to get itself back to the front of the grid. The Woking-based team has endured frustrating weekends in Valencia and Silverstone, and is keen to ensure that it delivers in Germany and Hungary so it does not lose any further ground in the title battle. With F1 teams facing a summer shutdown after Hungary, Button says there is added significance to the next two grands prix

Maldonado calm despite point-less run

Pastor Maldonado sees no reason to panic about his run of bad form in Formula 1 - even though he has failed to score a single point since his Spanish Grand Prix victory. The Williams driver has courted controversy in recent races – being involved in incidents at the last four grand prix events and earning a number of penalties and fines. But despite his lack of recent good results, the Venezuelan feels that he and his team have the potential to get themselves back to the form that helped them battle right at the front in Barcelona

Pedrosa: Matching Lorenzo too risky

Dani Pedrosa said he did his utmost to catch Jorge Lorenzo in MotoGP's Italian Grand Prix, but that trying to match the Yamaha's pace at the front started to feel too risky. Lorenzo ultimately won the Mugello race by five seconds, having passed poleman Pedrosa at the start.

Video: Watch a craftsman build a Ural sidecar by hand

Ural Sidecar Video

We're in love with the Ural line. The bare-bones bikes have a rugged, no-fuss appeal, but they're also pricey. There's good reason for that: most of Ural's products are hand-built by master craftsmen. Take the video below as proof. Visitors to the Irbit, Russia facility responsible for constructing the bikes recently got to see just what goes into stitching a sidecar together. There are no robots swinging panels around or making precision welds. Just one guy, some metalworking equipment, and a little patience.

The gentleman in the video manages to assemble the sidecar in just under four minutes. That's a lifetime in manufacturing, but well worth it in our judgement. How many items in your care were assembled by skilled hands? How many will be around in 10 years? How about 30? If our experiences with Ural are any gauge, this robust sidecar is in for the long haul.

Chevrolet Introduces Love It or Return It Policy for All 2012 and 2013 Models

How does one define love? For some, such as the Tin Man, that feeling is elusive and nebulous. For others, like, say, Steve Carell’s intelligence-challenged character Brick Tamland from the movie Anchorman, it’s as simple as loving a lamp and assorted office furniture. Chevrolet apparently has skewed towards the Brick Tamlands of this world with [...]

Webber wants F1 future beyond 2013

Mark Webber says he has no plans to retire from Formula 1 at the end of his contract with Red Bull Racing, having just extended his deal for another year. The Australian, who turns 36 in late August, secured a new one-year deal with Red Bull on Tuesday and will continue to drive for the squad he joined in 2007 at least until the end of 2013. Webber, however, insists that despite his age, he is not seeing next year as his last season in F1 and says he wants to continue racing after that.

Huttu Wins Silverstone Strategy Battle

Round Nine of the iRacing.com World Championship Grand Prix Series played host to the digital version of the Williams-Toyota FW31 at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, and it was Greger Huttu claiming the spoils of victory with his sixth win of the season. In a strategy battle with championship rival Hugo Luis, the 2010 champion sailed to the finish line with an eight-second advantage. Starting from pole after turning a qualifying lap of 1:19.651, Huttu maintained his position at the front when the lights turned green, with Luis sitting in his wake. Planning a two-stop strategy, the Finn eaked-out a seven second lead before heading to pit-road on Lap 20 for the first time. Electing to run with a heavier fuel load, Luis continued his way around the 3.2 mile [...]

Closer than it Looks

The iRacing.com Skip Barber Racing School Premier Series headed to the Midwest for the 10th week of racing action at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. There were more than 50 sim racers this week battling it out over the course of four official races. Mid Ohio proved to be a very exciting track on the schedule, as the 13 turn, 2.4 mile configuration provided an interesting shift in the points with just three weeks left in the season. Christian Aranha still retains a narrow points lead heading into the final week of competition and it is up to the championship contenders — led by Jan Niesiolowski — to step it up now if they want a shot at winning the series championship. The 10:00 GMT race had the lowest strength [...]

Official: Nissan designers consult Blue Angels for inspiration, photo op [w/video]

Nissan GTR with The Blue Angels

We've been hearing about automobiles being inspired by jets for decades. Saab even used it as a slogan for a number of years. But what exactly does it mean? Nissan recently paid a visit to the United States Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron training facility to get a feel for the fighter jets they fly as well as how the pilots interact with their machines.

The result? Well, we still don't know what it means for a car to be inspired by jets... Nissan says its "personnel returned with a number of creative ideas and actionable items from both a design and product development standpoint," but the Japanese automaker declines to get more specific. Maybe the next GT-R will come with an ejector seat, or perhaps a joystick in lieu of a steering wheel. But probably not.

Even if we don't quite get it, that doesn't mean nothing good came from the exercise. Blue Angels airframe structural mechanic Eric Vandamme (who has the second best name ever) got the chance to drive a new Nissan GT-R, and he came away predictably impressed: "If I had the keys to the jet, I would trade you," he says. We know a GT-R doesn't come cheap, but we suspect Nissan would make out quite well in that fantasy transaction.

Want to watch a video produced by Nissan about the Blue Angels and how its engineers were inspired? Of course you do. Scroll below for the news broadcast-style story, where you'll also find a related press release.
